Out of the Woods
A little house in the country
Tall trees all around
Nature unhindered
Not yet savaged by those who think with their wallets
A family comes to this place
With a child very little and defenseless
Unknowing of what's to come
Unprepared for what life will bring
A mother angry at life's injustice
Frustrated at being left behind
She wants to have fun with friends
Like before the kid and three more to come
A father of quiet humor
Who's childhood was filled with misery
Sad at what has been
but happy now with wife and kids
Together they struggle and toile with their lives
Time plays cruel tricks with twists and tears
Then blows them asunder
As wife and kids go south to winter
The father shuts himself inside
Never to come out and live again
He was never the same after his family left
Left alone with a yellow dog named Butch
The mother travels from state to state
From deep country to cities
Taking her kids along as she tries to escape
But always bringing her troubles with her
The kids try to understand
But they struggle just to find themselves
Trying not to get lost as they travel
The battle rages on
Time raged on with many battles since
From time to time family gather where the trees were
Those who still stand
They talk of old times while holding back tears
Tears that flow freely within
