A MACJR Elegy

In The Hills with a Pack

Dad had a knack for cars
At age 12 he re-built his first engine
And his hands were greasy ever after
Known far and wide for his skills
Always in demand as long as I can remember
Mick was legendary in his country community

His ducktail hairstyle was straight out of the 50's
About average height but of heavy build
The look of a rebel
But his heart was soft as puppy's fur
Still not a man you want mad at you

Mickey had a hard father
Who drove him internal at an early age
Fortunately, he had a good hearted mother
There to pick up the pieces as best she could

Although not all that educated Dad was curious
He loved dogs and nature
We went on many drives up on the logging roads
High up the hills in the Cascade Mountain Range
I will never know those hills like Dad did

Dad and I were not all that close in his last years
I had grown distant
I regret that deeply now
I wish I could have said goodbye
I wish I had been there

If there is a heaven
I know Dad is there with his dog Butch
And all the other dogs he loved as he grew up
I know Dad's happy there
He's happy now
